Tanssijalla ei voi koskaan ola tarpeeksi säärystimiä...
Kudoin nämä punaraitaiset säärystimet inspiroiduttuani eräässä videossa näkemistäni säärystimistä. Kun en löytänyt mistään vastaavia, päätin tehdä ne itse. Käytin säärystimissä kesällä Facebookin Voihan villasukka- ryhmässä suuressa huudossa ollutta räsymattotekniikkaa (olin siis edellä aikaani jo keväällä). Raidoitin keskenään Regian Stripemanian väriä 06368 sekä Novitan raitaa 857. Kudoin aina yhden rivin kutakin väriä, luoden alkuun 60 silmukkaa. Regian lanka oli hieman Novitaa ohuempaa, joten ehkäpä 66 silmukkaa olisi ollut parempi. No, pysyvätpähän ainakin ylhäällä.

Langassa oli tehtaan solmu joka on ehtinnyt aueta säärystimiä käyttäessäni. Langanpäät olivat niin lyhyet, että näin parhaaksi purkaa pikku pätkän säärystintä ja kutoa sen uudelleen. Nyt niistä tulee entistä ehommat.

A dancer can never have too many leg warmers...
I knit these red striped leg warmers after getting inspired by a video I saw. I couldn't find similar leg warmers anywhere, so I decided to knit them myself. After all, they are pretty much the easiest thing you can knit. I knit these already in April and the during the summer noticed this "technique" getting really popular in Facebook's Voihan villasukka- group. I alternated the two yarns (Regia Stripemania color 06368 and Novita stripe color 857) by knitting one round of each. I cast on 60 stitches. As the Regia was a bit thinner than Novita's yarn, I maybe should have cast on a bit more stitches. Oh well, at least they stay up!

Knitting these I noticed a knot from the factory. It had come undone while I was wearing these and unraveled a bit. I found it easier to rip a couple on cm: s and knit the rest again. Now they will be as good as new.

Kauden loppu lähestyy ja sitä myötä kiire lisääntyy (siksi ei postausta viime viikolla ja tämäkin myöhässä). Näytösvalmistelut ovat loppusuoralla ja todistukset melkein kirjoitettu. Kohta on edessä ihana kesäloma reissuineen, tänä vuonna käyn Berliinissä sekä New Yorkissa ja Torontossa.

The end of the semester is nearing and the days before my long holiday are nearing. I have been preparing (once again) costumes for my students, hence no post last week. But soon I'm off to holiday. First to Berlin and then to New York and Toronto.

Hiuskoriste balettiin - Ballet head piece

Yhdellä oppilaallani on edessään tanssikatselmus, jossa hän tanssii soolon. Sooloa varten tarvittiin tietenkin puku ja pukua varten pääkoriste. Löysin Google- haulla minulle mieluisen pääkoristeen mallin (ks. kuva alla) ja hyppäsin suoraan rakennushommiin. Olin tilannut Ebay: stä hatunteossa käytettävää rautalankaa sekä sekalaisia "timantteja," joten pystyin käymään suoraan työhön käsiksi. Tiarani ei ehkä kestä lähempää tarkastelua, mutta liikkeessä ja lavalla se mielestäni toimii ihan hienosti. 

A student of mine is participating in a dance show and she needed accessories for her costume. I found a picture of a tiara on Google (pic below) and started to make my own version of it. I happened to have all the supplies on hand (hoarder, who, me?) so I jumped straight to work. I used millinery wire I had ordered from Ebay and a random selection of beads and "diamonds." Close up the tiara isn't the most pretty, but I think it will work on stage and in movement.

Säärystimet - Leg warmers

Lokakuun 1. päivä vietettiin kansaivälistä balettipäivää. Useat isot balettiryhmät julkaisivat Youtubessa live streamia työpäivästään. Olin erityisen kiinnostunut ryhmien aamutunneista. Minusta on hauska nähdä mitä tanssijoilla on päällään, ja erityisesti mitä sarjoja he tekevät. Lontoon Royal Ballet'n aamutunnilla luulin nähneeni eräällä tanssijalla kaksiväriset, liukuvärjätyt säärystimet ja inspiroiduin niistä. Alla olevassa kuvassa ovat säärystimet. Selkeästihän kuvasta näkee, että tanssijalla on violetit trikoot ja päällä harmaat säärystimet. Mutta videota katsoessa mielikuva liukuvärjätyistä säärystimistä oli jo syntynyt. Tästä pääset muuten katsomaan koko aamutunnin.

On October 1st was the World Ballet Day, during which several big ballet companies live streamed parts of their day on Youtube. I was especially interested in the morning classes. I like seeing what the dancers wear and what combinations they do. I tought one of the Royal Ballet's dancers had on two-tones leg warmers and was really inspired by them. Looking at the picture below, it is obvious that she is wearing purple tights and grey leg warmers on top of them, but in the video it wasn't so clear. Anyway, the idea was already in my head. By the way, here is a link to the class in case you are interested.  

Päätin kokeilla Dropsin Karismaa säärystimiin, sillä edelliset säärystimeni olin tehnyt 7 Veljeksestä. Kudoin säärystimet 3,5mm puikoilla ja loin 60 silmukkaa. Olisin ehkä voinut vaihtaa 4mm puikkoihin, tai vaihtoehtoisesti luoda 64 silmukkaa, mutta nyt säärystimet ainakin pysyvät ylhäällä ilman kuminauhaa. Kudoin säärystimet suoraksi putkeksi, jotta niitä voisi käyttää kummin päin vain. Värinvaihtokohdassa käytin muokattua Ditherin ohjetta.

I decided to use Drops Karisma, because I did my previous leg warmers with 7 Brothers. I used 3,5mm needles and cast on 60 stitches. I could have been better off with 4mm needles or 64 stitches, but hey, at lest they stay up. I knit the leg warmers straight up and down so you can wear them either way. Between the two colors I used the modified pattern of Dither. 

Balettihameita - Ballet skirts

Viime aikoina kaikki aikani on mennyt balettihameiden tekemiseen, kutomiselle ei ole jäänyt aikaa. Stripe studyni odottelee viimeistä reunakerrostaan. Päätin tehdä oppilailleni uudet hameet joulujuhlaesitystä varten. Joka vuosi päätän, että en askartele oppilaille mitään ja silti joka vuosi päädyn tekemään heille jotakin. 

Alkuperäinen inspiraatio tuli täältä, mutta koska hameita piti alunperin tehdä 19 kpl (onneksi nyt niitä tarvitaan vain 15 kpl), päätin tehdä pelkän irrotettavan ristikon, jota voisi käyttää erilaisten hameiden päällä. Kyllä tähänkin saa kulumaan aikaa, noin 90 min / hame. Hameessa on mm. 100 kpl paljetteja, jokainen käsin kiinni ommeltuna. Toivotaan, että nämä näyttävät lavalla hyvältä. 

Lately I have spent all of my "free" time making these skirts. So no time for kniting, my Stripe study is waiting to be finished. I decided that my pre-ballet students needed new skirts for the christmas performance. Each year I promise not to make anything for them and every year I crack and make something. 

The original inspiration came from here. First I had to make 19 skirts (now luckily "only" 15), I decided only to make the criss-cross overlay so that I could use them with different skirts in the future. But these take time too, about 90 minutes / skirt. Including the 100 sequins I sew on by hand. Let's hope these will work on the stage. 

Vanhoja - Something old

Löysin arkistojen kätköistä kuvia vanhoista tekeleistäni. Halusin lisätä ne tänne, onhan tämä blogi ennen kaikkea muistikirjani. Pahoittelen kuvien huonoa laatua.

Pitkät säärystimet - Long leg warmers

Minulla on ollut pitkään Blochin pitkät säärystimet, joista pidän valtavasti. Sain niistä inspiraation tehdä oman versioni. Käytännössä vain suora putki säärystintä.

Lanka: 7 veljestä
Puikot: 3,5 mm
Pyöreää kuminauhaa 4 x 60 cm

Ohje:
Luo 64 silmukkaa (kapealle reidelle riittää 60 s) ja kudo 2O 2N joustinta 20 kierrosta pyörönä.
Jatka kutomista oikein ja raidoita haluamallasi tavalla. Kudo noin 85 cm, tai kunnes säärystin on mielestäsi tarpeeksi pitkä. Kudo loppuun 1O 1N resoria 4 kierrosta rullautumisen estämiseksi ja päättele löysästi.

Pujottele resorin tueksi vielä kaksi pyöreää kuminauhaa pitämään säärystimiä ylhäällä.

Nämä olisivat vaikka jämälangoistakin tehtyinä hauskat, eikä kahden säärystimen tarvitse olla symmetriset.

I've had a pair of Bloch leg warmers for ages and I really love  them. They inspired me to do a version of my own. Basically just a straight tube of leg warmer, simple as pie.

Yarn: 7 veljestä (or other worsted / 10 ply (9wpi) yarn)
Needles: five dpn's 3,5 mm
Round elastic 4 x 60 cm

Pattern:
Cast on 64 stitches (skinnier thighs could make do woth 60 stiches) and K2 P2 for 20 rounds in the round. Just keep knitting and stripe as you will (or don't) until leg warmer is about 85 cm long or as long as you need. Finish off with four rounds of K1 P1 and bind off loosely. 

Weave the elastic to support the ribbing.

These would be fun made out of scrap yarn too, and you wouldn't need to make them symmetric.

Pääkoristeita - Headdresses

Vikkelät sormet ja iso mielikuvitus ovat tanssinopettajan parhaat apuvälineet, ainakin mitä pääkoristeiden tekoon tulee. Balettioppilaani esittivät sisäköitä ja askartelin heille päähineet. Lavalle tehtävissä koristeissa on se hyvä puoli, että vaikka ne läheltä näyttäisivätkin hieman epäsiisteiltä, lavalla ne silti näyttävät hyviltä.

Quick fingers and a big imagination are a dance teachers greatest assets - when it comes to making headdresses. My ballet students danced as house maids and I decided to make their headdresses. When making things for the stage, you don't have to be too exact. Even though the headdress looks a bit messy close up, it will still look good on stage.

Hiuspantoja (Eurokaupasta 1€/kpl!)
Kartonkia (Tiimari)
Pitsinauhaa (Eurokangas)
Nitoja ja niittejä
Sakset
Kimalleliimaa (halutessasi, Tiimari)

What you need:
Hair bands (I bought mine from the 1€ store)
Card stock
Lace ribbon
A stapler and staples
Scissors
Glitter glue (optional)

 Leikkaa kartongista noin 12x8 cm pala ja taita se pituussuunnassa kaksinkerroin. Pidä taitettu puoli ehjänä, mutta leikkaa toiseen reunaan muutaman sentin välein koloja.

Cut approximately cm piece of the card stock and fold it in half lengthwise. Keep the folded side in tact, and cut slivers to the other side.

Laita hiuspanta kartongin taitteeseen ja muovaile kartonkia, jotta se asettuisi paremmin pannan alle. Niittaa kiinni. Toista kaikkien sakaroiden kohdalla.

Plase your headband in the middle of the card stock and mold it to fit the headband. Staple, staple, staple. 

Rypytä pitsinauhaa haluamallasi tavalla "luurangon" päälle ja kiinnitä niiteillä. Leikkaa ylimääräinen kartonki pois. Koristele halutessasi kimalleliimalla.

Rouche the lace ribbon on the "sceleton" and staple on. Cut away any excess card stock. Decorate with glitter glue.
